Collagen For Arthritis Treatment

How Does Collagen Treat Arthritis?

Collagen is the most abundant protein our body has.  We should maintain levels of protein collagen in the body. Multiple studies have indicated that taking collagen supplements has been shown to reduce inflammation and stimulate collagen synthesis in the body. People who have been using collagen in all kinds of forms reported they have less arthritic pain and have better flexibility. Collagen will relieve joint inflammation and pain as it does stimulate cartilage growth and can also provide support for the repair of cartilage tissue.  Thus, collagen is for arthritis treatment.  People who eat collagen as part of their diet notice their improvement that they have more flexibility and less joint pain.

What Happens If We Don’t Have Enough Collagen in our body?

Skin can sag and wrinkle.  Our muscles will shrink and body tone is lost. Tendons, joints, and ligaments can become painful and deteriorate. The bones can become fragile and prone to breaks.  Severe arthritis will be very painful with joint damage.  Eyesight will deteriorate and lose focus.  Not enough collagen in the body will also affect heart health and blood pressure can go up.  The brain will shrink with old age and will cause dementia or Alzheimer’s.

The Difference Between Collagen and Gelatin

Gelatin is high in protein. Gelatin and collagen contain similar proteins. Lab tests have suggested that consuming gelatin can provide similar benefits.  Manufacturers produce gelatin by processing animal bones, cartilage, and skin. Marine gelatin is from fish. The process extracts collagen, a fibrous protein that connects muscles, bones, and skin in animals that turns into gelatin. A flavorless, colorless substance with a jelly-like texture.   Protein consists of various amino acids.  Gelatin contains them also.  The most common amino acids in gelatin include glycine, proline, and valine.   Valine is an essential amino acid that the human body cannot produce.  It must come from the diet or supplementation.  Gelatin promotes joint health and brain function and can improve the muscle appearance of nails, skin, and hair.

Benefits of Eating Gelatin

I have been using Knox gelatin for several months now. I love Knox Gelatin with coconut flavor.  Use your favorite fruits and a bit of brown sugar if needed.  Good tasting and feel satisfied when eating fruit gelatin as it gives a feeling of fullness.  Mixing 1 tbsp of Knox powder in oatmeal for breakfast is also good.  When mixing with oatmeal, stir in the Knox powder with the oatmeal and brown sugar or stevia first so that it is easy to dissolve and does not congeal.   Mix with coconut milk and boil. It prevents clumping.  I have been consuming  Knox gelatin for months now and have not heard the sound coming from my right shoulder joint when exercising.  I lift each of my arms using a 6 lbs dumbbell up and down over my head. I was amazed by the result. To know more about the Benefits of Gelatin, click here.

Hydrolyzed Collagen – Fast Absorption In the Body

The hydrolyzed collagen is processed intensively breaking the protein into smaller pieces. It has 90% absorption so it is rapidly absorbed by the body. Gelatin has longer absorption in the body. Collagen has the same amino acids as gelatin but different chemical properties.  Hydrolyzed collagen will easily mix with cold and hot drinks.  It dissolves easily and is tasteless.  You can mix the powder with smoothies, coffee, chocolate, hot or cold, or your favorite juice.  Knox powder will mix well when boiled in hot liquid, hot chocolate drink, or hot coffee.

How Does Collagen Support Our Body

The collagen production in our body declines when we age. We start having joints, muscles, and bone pains.  Wrinkles also appear on our skin.   Supplementing with collagen will help boost the different types of amino acids our body needs.  Collagen will help hydrate our muscle tissues so we can stretch easier and make our connective tissues stronger.  Supplementing will gradually re-grow cartilage in the joints and have stronger muscles,  bones, and reduce pain.  Studies show that 30 days of collagen supplementation gave elderly women more elasticity and moist skin.   Also a significant increase in skin elasticity than those who did not take the supplement.  The wrinkle-reducing effects have been attributed to collagen’s ability to stimulate the body to produce collagen on its own.   It can make your muscles toned and burned fat.  Taking the supplement can make you feel full and satisfied after a meal, similar to Knox gelatin which can help you lose weight.  I mix hydrolyzed collagen in my green tea.  It does not affect the taste.  While still being researched, a few studies show that hydrolyzed collagen may play a role in preventing and treating osteoporosis.  For more information on Hydrolyzed Collagen, watch the video below.

Collagen’s Positive Health Effect

In a study of 100 people with blood sugar problems, taking marine collagen for 90 days gave them better blood pressure, blood glucose, and increased insulin sensitivity. The latter is crucial if you have concerns about blood sugar. Collagen can also lower triglycerides and LDL cholesterol.  I have been taking hydrolyzed collagen for a month now.  I will do an update post or report later on the results of supplementing collagen. My husband has also started eating collagen and I will include his result in my future report.

I love gelatin-like crazy so jellied fruits are always part of my diet.  I also love all kinds of fresh juice and smoothies so I always mix collagen hydrolysate with my drinks.

  1. That’s really cool I did not know that you could get collagen in jelly form and think that it could really improve people’s lives by making it tastier and more fun to put collagen in the food and smoothies that they make. What was your biggest hurdle in using gelatin to ingest extra collagen for your body?

    • Thank you for your comments, Jon.  Well, Jelly or Gelatin is simply the cooked form of collagen.  When set and cold, it is fun to eat . . . .  whereas, collagen you can mix in cold or hot liquid and dissolves easily.  My biggest hurdle about gelatin powder is when I want to cook it with other powder to create something different, I forget to mix first before adding the cold liquid.  The gelatin powder clumps even after you boil it.  It is hard to dissolve when the powder clumps.  I love eating jelly when I am busy and need to eat something!  So convenient!   Thank you for visiting my website.  Come back again!

    • Hello Mr. Biizy,

Thank you for your visit.  Definitely you can get gelatin and collagen from eating animal proteins like bovine bones, cartilages from fish, pork and skin, chicken bones. You can eat the connective tissues and cartilages and boil the bones to make bone broth.  The gelatin and collagen are extracted from connective tissues and cartilages of the animals.   Make sure you remove the fats and the animals are pastured and roam free.  Eating too much fat can cause high cholesterol and can cause coronary disease. I hope my answers helpful and good luck to you!

      To your health,

  4. I have been looking at articles on this subject for a long time, since my wife is a rheumatoid arthritis, and we always knew that gelatin is something that helps.

It is good to know the experience of someone who is taking it.

I also use it a lot, but to feel satisfied in the hours I don’t eat. I use light jelly without sugar, and if I can’t put it in the fridge to get the “hard” snack, I take it as juice! 🙂

The truth is that a substance that many people still do not know how good it can be. And how easy it is to carry it in your backpack!

I will study further the point that you advise on hydrolyzed collagen. I did not know this particular subject.

Thank you very much for the note

    • You’re welcome Pablo.  Thank you for your visit. If you have been using gelatin a lot, it benefits your body.  Yes, try the hydrolyzed collagen for your wife.  It might help her.  If she has been having rheumatoid arthritis for a long time and it is severe, it may take a few months before she experience very good results.  Other people who have used it, have alleviated the pain.  When they stop consuming, the pain comes back.If your wife has rheumatoid arthritis on her hands, ask her to try stretch her fingers daily to help some blood flow to her fingers.  That will help a lot.  I have recommended that to my sister in law and it has helped her with the pain.  Her hands do not hurt as bad as before and no pain most of the time.  Blood flow to all parts of our body is very important. It keeps our muscle tissues and ligaments alive and for re-grow.  Thank you and I hope I am able to help.

  5. Thank you so much for sharing with us such a beautiful article. I have noticed that as we get older, our body’s collagen production decreases and we begin to feel more bone pain. Even it is feeling on the skin. My grandmother has been suffering from this problem for a long time and I was looking for some complimentary product to eliminate it. Right then your article caught my eye and I found the collagen needed to solve my problem. Collagen expands our muscle tissue and strengthens connective tissue. This strengthens muscles and bones and helps reduce pain. It also eliminates blood sugar problems and increases blood glucose and insulin sensitivity, which is very important if blood sugar is concerned. And the news of this collagen was given to me by my friend and I used to collect and use it so my grandmother was very comfortable. I think this collagen powder is very useful for the treatment of arthritis so I will ask others to collect it and I have collected this article for your future.

Thank you for visiting my site.  I am glad to hear you found my post helpful. I hope it will help your grandmother.  Treating arthritis pain will need more than 1 kind of natural treatment but will work effectively.  Have you heard of frankincense oil?   I have an article on the oil and you can revisit my site and open the article on Essential Oils.  Frankincense is perfect for inflammation.  Arthritis is inflammation. Good luck!

    • Hi Razvanllie,

Thank you for your comments about my website. Both gelatin and collagen benefit me.  I have read other peoples’ review using hydrolyzed collagen.  Some said have no effect on them but majority of the review were people with positive results and they are very happy.  I have good results myself.  For arthritis pain, we really can’t just depend on one treatment alone to effectively get rid of arthritis pain.  I rub essential oil on my achy muscles if I am experiencing it.  I always do a simple exercise 3-4 times a week to make me limber and more flexible.  It does help and pays off as I don’t have arthritis pain.  When I have done heavy physical work, then I use my essential oils to prevent sore muscles.  If you are interested, please visit my posts on Essential Oil and simple exercise you can do.  It may help you.  Again, thank you for your visit.  Please come again.

  9. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on collagen. My skin is very dry and wrinkly. I didn’t know that gelatin gives elasticity to your skin and makes it moist. I better start taking gelatin to lessen wrinkles and make my skin moist. I need to buy and try the hydrolyzed collagen.
